you can do better!
I can help
Specializing in U.S. History and Civics, Reading, Literature, and Writing, including college essay writing and editing, I help students improve their capacity to self-teach, and self-improve long after they’ve moved on from our work together. Schedule one-time, or weekly virtual sessions, or commission a customized semester course!
Choosing the best education option for your child can be a stressful, confusing process, especially lately. In-person, online, hybrid? Micro-school, private, charter? Having choices is great, which is best for your child? I can help you navigate the process, translate the sales-pitches, and guide you so your choice will be “better,” not just different.
Using recorded and live presentations, I help parents and independent educators understand the dangers and learning deficits associated with today’s progressive, postmodern education trends. You can commission customized video or webinar content, or book me to speak to your next event!
Writing about the same complex concepts I cover in my spoken conten allows me to provide more detailed analysis, as well as visual evidence of the challenges we face in American education today. Commission freelance articles for print and web, white-papers, or study guides for students, or hire me to edit yours!
If you’re looking for a translator, a guide, and a coach who understands the current education landscape, who’s relatable, because she has personally experienced how frustrating and anxiety-inducing it can be trying to find the best possible education for your children, you’ve come to the right place!
I created The Reason We Learn to
- educate and inform you with the most accurate, current news and analysis about educational options in America today;
- guide you as you evaluate your options, and reclaim your rightful role as your children’s first and most important teacher;
- deliver tutoring services that meet your child’s needs.
I look forward to working with you!
WHY CHOOSE ME
When you work with me, you will get a passionate, committed teacher, advisor, and coach.
Whether you need a little support, or a lot, I am here for you!
I do more than research, I verify and analyze what I find, and have a knack for translating complex ideas and edu-speak word-salad into plain English, and spot red flags earlier than most. My job is to make sure you understand education policy and curriclum trends well enough to make a difference, whether you’re running for school board, leading a parent support group, or on behalf of your own children.
I’ve worked in several fields outside education, from food service to financial services. My background is broad enough to know when the Educrats are making things up about what students “need” for “success” in the world outside acadmia. Combining that experience with my background in education, I know how to translate their terminology so you’ll understand it.
It sounds cliché, but I’ve been there. I’m a mother of three, who has personal experience with public school, charter school, and homeschool. Chances are, I’ve had most of the same feelings of frustration, confusion, intimidation, worry, and overwhelm you’re feeling right now. When you work with me, you will get more than service, you’ll get support from someone who “gets” what you’re going through.
WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING
Deb Fillman is an expert in the field of education. She understands the importance of a quality education, going beyond teaching the basics or memorization, Deb knows a successful student learns how to think critically and how to apply what they learn in real situations. She understands that these crucial steps are being ignored in many K-12 schools across the country. Her approach is an effective, classic education tailored to meet the unique needs of each student.
I connected with Deb via her expertise in education and her YouTube channel. I have a college age daughter and was uneasy at the pace and direction of her junior college classes. I basically needed reassurance from an outside observer. Deb had one Zoom with my daughter, and they made an immediate connection. My daughter said to me “She’s a very nice person” – Deb was able to see clearly, what was hard for me to see as a concerned parent: that my daughter had a vision and was on track.
I would not hesitate to utilize Deb’s tutoring and subject services as our needs arise.
Today, more than ever, parents with children in public schools need to be involved. Deb gave me practical advice on how to advocate for my children regarding a variety of crucial issues affecting them academically and socially. She also provided me with information on how to educate my children in regards to difficult and tempting situations teenagers are facing in our current society. Deb has really created this wonderful educational platform to help parents and educators protect their children and students.
